Signing Time

My cute sister-in-law Katrina works for Signing Time and told me months ago about their DVDs that teach babies and children American Sign Language. I bought the two Baby Signing Time DVDs last December for Brooklynn and am completely in love with them (and so is Brooklynn--she goes NUTS whenever we put it on)! Several people have mentioned to me their fear that if babies learn to sign it will delay their speaking ability but I completely disagree. I think Brooklynn speaks so well because she signs. It helps me select a few words that we use often and emphasize those words--plus, every word she signs she also tries to say. Of course, when she was just learning to talk, her words weren't very clear so the signs helped me understand her better. Brooklynn's favorite songs are the ones with hand motions so it only makes sense that she would pay more attention to words that have signs attached as well. We now watch the regular Signing Times in addition to the Baby Signing Time DVDs and I am constantly amazed at how quickly she picks up words and signs. I have the highest praise for these DVDs.

Anybody interested can call Katrina at Signing Time--801-676-4440.

That is so awesome that your sister in law works for them. We LOVE them too and I definitely agree that signing helps them speak earlier (and helps us understand their first words). Ella still loves watching them and I think it has helped her word recognition to prepare her for reading too.

Good to know! I'll have to give Katrina a call. That would be a fun job! I think those DVD's must be very stimulating for their little brains. Sure beats watching cartoons! How's little Ian doing? Smother him w/kisses for me!

We are also big fans! (Thanks for getting us started Em! I guess we have you to thank for all the shows we watch!) Matty loves to teach me what he learns on the show and Katie loves to sign along now. We record the Signing Time episodes off PBS that run on Saturdays. That and scripture movies are the only Sunday approved viewing at our house so the kids watch them a lot. In church Matty was drawing and asked me how to spell a word and I stealthily signed the letters to him. It was so Handy! (yut, yut, yut.)
